A good routine is important to me, and I think my routine in Rio is one of the best I've ever had. Here it is:
I wake up early! Usually, I'm up between 6:00 am and 7:30 am.
Most mornings, I go for a run. I run along the beach from Posto 9 in Ipanema to Posto 2 in Copacabana. Sometimes, I'll take a lap around the lagoon instead. These routes take me about an hour to finish. It's best to run before the sun is too high in the sky, so I try to make it as close to sunrise as possible.
After running, I stop at Polis Sucos and get my usual: acai com banana y proteina, sem syrop. By now, the guys know my order, so they only need to ask, "grande ou pequen?" -- big or small? We exchange a smile, a nod and a thumbs up.
I get to the office between 10:30 am and noon. Rio is three hours ahead of New York, so I feel like I've got a jump on the day.
My office is only a couple blocks from my apartment in Ipanema. It's called DOCA Coworking. I love working at DOCA and I plan to write more about it later.
I spend the first 15 minutes in the office meditating, then another 15 minutes thinking about and planning my day. This is a new habit I started when I moved to Rio. I find it helps me stay focused and productive for the rest of the day.
I go for lunch at New Natural, a by-weight salad bar beside my office. I fill my plate with all kinds of salads and a piece of grilled fish. It costs me between $R25 and $R35, which works out to $6-$9. I try to read a book at lunch; sometimes, I actually do.
I leave the office around 9 pm most days and walk to the gym; it's only a block from my office. The gym is always PACKED, but it's the best one around. I'm typically out of there by 10:30 pm. (Yes, that means I'm working out twice a day! I'm in the best shape of my life.)
On my way home, I'll get another acai, or a steak or chicken sandwich.
My day ends around 11 pm. A few nights a week I might go out for drinks, but I'm usually in bed before 1 am.
This is basically what fills my weekdays in Rio. I sightsee in the mornings or on weekends.
It's amazing how a new place can help form better habits. With this routine, I can say that 2016 is off to a good start. I'm excited to experience what's next, and I'm hopeful the good habits I've formed in Rio will come with me.
